Have I lost my mind?!

I think I must be going bonkers! In the last 24 hours, I have agreed to do/attempt to do, two things I have very little (or even no) experience in!

Last night a friend of mine told me about auditions for yet another children’s theatre performance, which will be taking place next March. It sounded interesting, so I phoned the contact person and found out that not only are auditions next weekend (10th of November), but the show is a musical theatre performance and they’re primarily looking for singers and dancers!

I am neither a singer, nor a dancer, so had I been sane, I would have backed out there. But not me. I explained to the woman that although I’ve done a lot of straight theatre for children before, I have very little experience with singing and even less with dancing! This didn’t seem to worry her, and she told me to come and audition anyway, so obviously it didn’t bother me either and I’m going to go!

I’ll be very surprised if I end up getting in, but I suppose I’m one of those people who’ll try anything once, and it’ll be good experience either way!

The other thing I’ve never done before is stage managing. Although I have a lot of ACTING experience, and have been on the crew a couple of times before, I’ve never actually been THE stage manager. Once again, enter my willingness to help out and eagerness to try random new things, and when I got an email from the drama administrator at university asking for a volunteer stage manager for an end of year performance by some of the music students (this Friday night, with the dress rehearsal tomorrow afternoon), I responded. I phoned the woman named in the email (and emailed her as well, since I had to leave a message) explaining who I was and that I’d be willing to take on this job. I haven’t heard back from her yet, so she may have already found somebody else, but I hope I do. It’ll be interesting, and once again, good experience.

I just hope I’m capable of doing it! I think I will be, I’m not a half wit, and I’ve observed enough stage managers in the past to know more or less what they’re supposed to do!

As for Aladdin – still nothing new and exciting to report. I haven’t heard from the director so I’m assuming I haven’t got the genie part, which sort of sucks, since it would have been fun, but it’s not as if I haven’t got enough other stuff going on at the moment as well (with the film, the music performance, work, exams, the audition….). Either way, I’m no longer too bothered. smile

Also – Happy Halloween to those of you who celebrate it! Have a fun (and safe!) evening!

Halloween // Aladdin

Yay! I made a Halloween layout! I KNOW we don’t really celebrate it in NZ, but I wanted to make one anyway, because I was bored, and because I didn’t really like the Deery Lou one I had up yesterday (if you were lucky enough to catch it, you’ll probably know what I mean!). The idea of it was ok, it just needed a bit more attention before it was exactly right. I might bring it back after Halloween, if I can work out what to fix!

Last night was the first read through for Aladdin. When I got there I was none too impressed to find that I hadn’t actually been given a specific part, and was instead considered an “extra/wedding guest/townsperson”!

For the this reason I’m not sure whether I’m going to do the show or not. The director did say that another woman, who plays one of the genies, is not longer able to take part for some reason, so her role needs to be recast. She was looking at me when she said it, so I could end up with that being offered to me. However, I doubt it, why would she go from not casting me at all to casting me as one of the leads? I just don’t know, but I suppose stranger things have happened!

If I don’t get that part, I probably either won’t be in it at all, or I’ll be on the crew instead and do backstage stuff. It’s the 10+ hours of rehearsal a week that get to me. That might not seem like a lot, but when I’m not even going to be doing anything other than standing around being in the background, it’s just not worth it. I’ve had much bigger parts in a lot of shows in the past, so it’s not as if I’m some newbie who needs all the experience they can get! Time will tell I suppose.

Candy Town MB

On my last post I got a couple of comments asking me why I left Candy Town MB. I did explain why in a post on the board itself, and to some people via IM, but I guess I should explain it here too, since curious people are wondering!

Mostly, I just left because I felt too old. I’m 20, and the average age of the membership seems to be getting increasingly younger. Although I have nothing against young people, I found the the atmosphere on that particular forum had become one I no longer identified with. I’ve also become very busy with work and university and acting recently, so my time is being taken up by those things in addition.

I did not leave because of some drama, a fight between myself and other staff members, or because I did something to warrant my being banned. I’m still on good terms with everyone else from that forum and am still in touch with a lot of them on other forums, IM and our sites.

However. Some of you might also have noticed that yesterday CTMB went “on hiatus” with the following explanation posted…

Hey guys, it’s time for us to all admit defeat.

CT is going nowhere if we keep up the way it’s going now. We just keep losing more and more of the older members who have been around for ages and who solidify the board. There is a large split between the members. It’s really not a fun board anymore.

So rather than close it or whatever we’re taking a little bit to change stuff. We need to bring CT up to a more acceptable age, sure it’s cool that we’re getting a lot of new members but it’s at the cost of the old members! When we come back expect a more mature atmosphere.

See you all in the future…

I agree with this and hope that the remaining staff do manage to do something to solve this problem – I’m sure they will, and, when the board reopens with it’s “more mature atmosphere”, I will more than likely also be back.

Well I hope that satisfies everybody’s curiosity – sorry the reason for my leaving isn’t juicier and more dramatic, hahah!

Dramarama!

Wow, after what feels like a MONTH I decided it was time to blog again (even if it has really only been what, 4 days!?) Not a lot exciting has happened this week, aside from having lots of assignments to finish and exams to study for!

I filmed another bit of the documentary yesterday, which was fun. It was really different to last weekend’s though, where there was 13 people acting, because yesterday it was only myself, another girl and another older woman! Getting ready took a lot less time and we were done by just after 1pm! I have some photos of yesterday, which I will add to both Flickr and this post when I can be bothered doing so! As far as I know, my last day for filming is next Saturday, so that should be interesting! The date of the first screening isn’t ’til May 10th 2008, so I suppose they still have a lot of editing to do between now and then!

Last night I went to Chicago, which is my theatre company’s annual musical. It was really great, and the house was full, so hopefully they make some good money out of it too! It was interesting seeing people I know in it too – sometimes I forgot that I have some seriously talented friends!

Speaking of theatre, I’m in yet another show myself as well, Aladdin, which is the Christmas pantomime with the same company which is doing Chicago right now. At first I was a bit bummed that I didn’t get a bigger part than I did, but now I’ve realised it’s actually pretty good, since I’m doing so much other stuff (when I agreed to do the film, I wasn’t nearly such a big part of it!) and most likely wouldn’t have been able to do it justice anyway! It should be fun though, I don’t think Christmas would really by Christmas without the panto! It opens on December 5th and the first rehearsal/read through is on Monday night.

Thanks for all the comments on the last post, off to return them all now, and to visit my allocated Despair people!

Something utterly bizarre, and a Flickr account!

Due to the fact that I have used ALL my BBS gifts and avatars to date, I had to find something else to put in this blog instead…

Luckily I found something amusing and suitable on Youtube the other day. A video of some people from my theatre company dancing extremely fast!

Of course they weren’t originally dancing like this, or to this song, but someone apparently videoed part of a rehearsal and edited it! ROFL!

Sadly I wasn’t in this show so you can’t see me here, but oh well. I know most of the people, which makes it hilarious. Well. For me at least!

If you’re wondering why it’s smaller than most Youtube videos, it’s because I resized it! Whoever videoed this must have done it on their digital camera, since the quality is shocking, and resizing it makes it marginally better.

In other news, I finally decided to follow the crowd and get a Flickr account, lol. For awhile now I’ve been using Coppermine, and I liked it at first, but now it’s kind of annoying and ugly and difficult to use, as well as taking up an awful lot of SPACE!

Just so you know, a lot of my photos (probably most of them) are restricted and only visible to people on my friends list. This is just so they don’t show up in searches, so if you know me, please feel free to add me!

Visit my flickr account here!

Also, thanks for all the comments about the film (all 15 of them! Man! If I get any more I’ll be tempted to think I’ve become “one of the popular blogs”! Mind you, that post was up for 2 days I suppose) I got a phone call from the producer yesterday asking me to come in on Friday for yet another scene (still as a schoolgirl from the 1950s), so that should be good! I’m in 4 scenes now, so hopefully I’ll get SOME screen time!
