At work this morning the other tutors and I were all working on various things with our students when I looked over towards the doors and saw a couple of people outside. Although the doors are automatic, we often leave them on “lock” because they are very sensitive and have a tendency to open whenever a pedestrian passes by on the footpath outside. Not only is this annoying, but it also makes the room very cold in winter!
When I saw the people outside, I immediately let them in. In came Grumpy Lady (GL) and her daughter. Once she had voiced her immense displeasure at the doors being shut (even though I apologised), she said that daughter was here for a lesson. I don’t teach that child and didn’t know her, but thankfully another tutor, who has been here longer than me, quickly came to see what the problem was. She didn’t know anything about it either, and by now GL had picked up on the fact that they were unexpected. This caused her to become extremely irate, and rudely comment “This isn’t good enough! I wish there was someone here who knew what they were doing!”
At first I thought we must have made a mistake, so I was very apologetic and offered to call the manager, who was away today on a course, but GL wouldn’t accept that, saying that she’d driven in from out of town and would rather leave. So she left. Thirty seconds later she was back again with her business card and a request to have the manager call her. We apologised again and said we would arrange it.
After she left we thought about it and concluded that, no, there was no way that child could have been scheduled for a lesson today, since surely the manager wouldn’t have gone away without saying ANYTHING about it to ANY of us!
Eventually the manager got back. I explained what had happened and she told me that no, the girl was NOT supposed to have a lesson today. She had been booked in to come for only two lessons, both of which had already taken place! She called GL back, defending both the doors being shut (because the center is officially “closed” during the school holidays) and the confused reactions of myself and the other tutor! I didn’t hear what GL said, but judging by the one side of the conversation I did hear, she was not in the least apologetic for HER mistake!
Oh well! Better than an entirely boring Tuesday, I suppose!
