Now that I have been to bed, and thought some more about rehearsal last night, my brain is now functioning well enough to be able to write about rehearsal.
Not so long ago I learned that I am apparently a very strange type of actor, because I enjoy rehearsals just as much (sometimes even more!) than performances! I don’t know why, I guess in some ways it’s the fun of meeting the rest of the cast for the first time, getting to know them (if I don’t already) and figuring out as a group how on earth we’re going to approach this play. IMHO, this is fun! *weirdo*
Like I said last night, the first rehearsal (where we actually did stuff, as opposed to just reading through the script) went pretty well. The show’s only an hour long, with 21 pages of script, and we got to the top of page 11, so that’s definitely progress. There are six of us in the cast, we’re all pretty young, and everyone I didn’t already know seems like they’re really friendly and easy to get along with.
They’re also really good actors, and I was really surprised when most of them seemed to have their character already "there". They got on stage and seemed like they knew what they were doing, at least a lot more than I did. I just kind of tried stuff out and waited to see what the director had to say, which was a lot. I felt like he said more to me than to everyone else combined!
Mental note to self: This is not bad. This was the first rehearsal. I’m not supposed to have a complete character yet…right? o.O
Before I went to tutoring this afternoon I went to visit the Christmas section of Ballantynes, a large and typically very expensive department store.
I have visited this Christmas shop before, but can’t seem to stay away, since every time I go in they seem to have something new!
On this particular occasion I was leaning towards a very tall and bushy display Christmas tree1, and as I tried to step back and stand up, I discovered that I was attached.
Some of my hair had managed to tangle itself around a branch and ornament, to such a degree that I couldn’t get my head far enough away from it to see how to untangle myself! Luckily there was a shop assistant a few metres away so, I called out "Excuse me! I seem to be, ah, caught on your tree!"
The most embarassing part of the whole thing was the fact that the shop was packed full of customers at the time, and one particular lady was laughing so hard you’ve have thought I was the funniest thing she’d ever seen in her life!
Eventually the nice shop assistant did manage to get me un-stuck, without have to to cut either hair or tree! She also told me that she’d gotten caught on stuff there before too, which made me feel slightly less idiotic. Just.
looking at something I may or may not be planning to give away on this blog as it gets nearer to Christmas [↩]
