Year Eight

I found out today that I will be teaching Year 8 students. That’s 12/13 year olds! SO not the 5-year-olds I think I want to have a real job teaching, but that’s ok, older kids are probably fun in their own way! I’m looking forward to it!

I don’t start there until the middle of April, but I’m going in next Friday to meet the associate teacher and have a look around the school.

Yep. I’m very excited. :)

Tomorrow we find out which schools and age groups we’re going to be with for our first teaching practice starting in the middle of April, so that will be exciting! When we filled out the form we had the opportunity to specify which area of town we’d prefer1, and which age group we’d like to be with. I wrote that I would prefer a school within reasonable distance of my house, but left the preferred age blank.

Although at the moment I THINK I’d like to have a job teaching younger kids, I’ve heard a lot of people who have been through teachers college say that their thoughts on “favourite age groups” changed so much over their course of study, that I don’t want to tie myself down to a particular one quite yet. Knowing me, I’ll probably go from wanting 5 year olds to wanting to teach 12 and 13 year olds in an intermediate school! Seriously. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Between now and next April, we have to do three five week long placements. One each at a junior level (Year 1-3), one at a middle level (Year 4-6) and one at a senior level (year 7 -8).

We shall see. *cue mysterious music*

  1. Because some students are from outside of Christchurch so it would be convenient for them not to have to spend ages traveling back and forth each day []
